How to Create Your Cyanotype Prints:
1. Prepare Your Workspace:
Find a clean, flat surface in an area away from sunlight to set up your cyanotype paper. It's best to start in a dark room; indoor LED lighting is fine and will not affect the cyanotype paper.
2. Arrange Your Botanicals:
You can use the dried leaves provided in your kit, or experiment with your own botanicals - dry or fresh, both are fine and will create different textures. You can also use objects such as gears, necklaces, lace, or other small items.
Simply place your flowers or objects on top of the cyanotype paper. Play around with different compositions to create your desired effect, whether you’re aiming for delicate outlines or bold contrasts. To prevent the wind from disturbing your arrangement, it's best to cover your piece with a sheet of glass or transparent food wrap.
3. Expose to Sunlight:
The ideal exposure conditions are a bright, sunny day around noon, when the UV index is highest. Take your prepared paper outside and place it in direct sunlight. Leave it under the sun for about 20-30 minutes. The exact time may vary depending on the strength of the UV rays - the lower the UV, the longer the exposure time needed.
4. Rinse and Reveal:
Once the exposure time is complete, gently rinse the paper with cool tap water, then soak it in water for about 5 - 10 minutes, changing the water once or twice. When the areas covered by the botanicals or objects appear relatively white rather than yellow, the print is ready to be removed from the water.
The covered areas will remain white, while the exposed areas will turn a vibrant blue, revealing your cyanotype print.
5. Dry and Enjoy:
Lay your print flat in a shaded area to dry. Once dry, you can place it under books or other heavy items to help flatten the paper before framing. When completely dry and flat, your cyanotype artwork is ready to frame, gift, or display.
